Born and bred to craft with bread, Kristina grew up in the gourmet sandwich industry. At her parents’ shop, where she was a seasoned employee by the age of 12, they served up sandwiches both savory and sweet, and always taught quality over compromise.
Kristina carried her passion for hand-crafted meals and a family-friendly atmosphere to Simi Valley, where she raised children of her own. And once her youngest was in middle school, she embraced her upbringing and opened Old School in December of 2011. Kristina put her heart and soul into the shop and was able to bring it to town with more passion than cash. On a shoestring budget, she was confident that consistent, mouth-watering, high-quality sandwiches and word-of-mouth praise would grow the business. And she was certainly right.
“It’s been hard. Really hard,” Kristina said. “Some days you want to jump for joy and some days you want to cry. But I love the people that I get to meet and am passionate about the store and the experience customers have when they come here.”
When deciding on a name for the gourmet shop, Kristina kept going back to the thought that she’d like to take things back to how they were. With everything made fresh and from scratch. Old School. And so the name was born. Boasting (humbly) more than just decadent bites and an amiable staff, Old School’s charm is enhanced by the personalized decor as well. The signage and interior were designed by Kristina and her family.
Kristina has three daughters and a son. Her eldest has been with the business since day one, only recently leaving for college, and there’s very much a family vibe among the rest of the staff. When asked about her employees, Kristina said, “It’s important that my crew is happy being here.” And it only becomes more evident with every member of the Old School family you meet.
Old School also offers catering.
